Check out these awesome pictures of Sun Dogs (or Parahelions) taken in Mendocino.
Whoa nice photos, Ryan!
Speaking of sundogs, the other afternoon I was lying outside in Fort Mason with friends and we saw a full circle rainbow all the way around the sun! It was a fairly sunny day, but there were clouds right around the sun and on them you could see a huge and really bright circular rainbow…it was pretty cool.
ALSO, i went to Yosemite 2 weeks ago- the night before the full moon- and i saw a MOONBOW!!! It was so incredible. This group of physicists in Texas have calculated quite precisely when the moonbows will be visible there and posted the dates and times on this website if you ever wanna go (I’ll go back with you!): http://uweb.txstate.edu/~do01/
I convinced my dad and brother that hiking to Lower Yosemite Falls in the dark would be worth it, and sure enough, as soon as the moon “rose” over the mountains to the south of us, the moonbow appeared… very faintly at first and then it become more and more visible. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a tripod and camera capable of taking 8 minute exposures like the photographers next to us. But it was a really cool experience, hanging out in the wilderness and watching the stars and moon and moonbow slowly change positions relative to us as everything moved over the course of night.
Wow Anne, that’s awesome!
I had a special sighting this summer too. I was hanging out at the temple at burning man and I looked up and there were sun dogs. I was so excited I started running across the desert and telling everyone to look.
I have resolved to pay more attention to the sky.
